    Hopper’s biographer, Gail Levin, wrote, “On March 5, he began the French Six-Day Runner. The subject had been simmering since December 1935 when Josephine Hopper complained to Marion [Hopper’s sister] that Edward repeatedly went to bike races at Madison Square Garden, just to see the same scene over and over again. She was annoyed by the forty-cent bills he brought back without painting anything. At that time, he was unable to paint and she thought they could make a trip, perhaps to New Orleans, so that he could work again. This was one of the occasions when she simply misunderstood the often long gestation periods that Hopper’s creative process required. Very little time after that Hopper painted again."
    In his letters, Hopper described the subject of the painting: "I could not remember the name of the runner, only that he was young and dark and of quite French appearance. I have not attempted a precise portrait, but it resembles him in a general way. He was one of the last French teams to win a race at Madison Square Garden. He is supposed to rest while his teammate is on the track when `The Garden' is full in the afternoon or evening.
