In his lifetime, as the son of a physician from Tuskegee, Alabama, Bridgman would become one of the most acclaimed American artists, as well as one of the world's foremost "Orientalist" painters.
He was born in Tuskegee and raised in Tuscaloosa. In 1864-1865, he worked as a draftman for the American Bank Note Company in New York City and studied art at the Brooklyn Art Association and the National Academy of Design during the same time period; however, in 1866, he moved to Paris and began studying under Jean-Leon Gerome. After that, he made Paris his home base.
During his 1873-1874 trip to Egypt, he captured images of the region that drew immediate attention. The Funeral Procession of a Mummy on the Nile, which he exhibited in the Paris Salon and sold to James Gordon Bennett for $15,000, earned him the Cross of the Legion of Honor. His other works include An American Circus in Normandy, Procession of the Bull Apis, and a Rumanian Lady, which are all on display at the Corcoran Gallery of Art in Washington, D.C. (in the Temple collection, Philadelphia, Pennsylvania).
