A single man is fooling around on the gas pump, but he isn't wearing a uniform. The lights at the pump are on, and it is nighttime. Most of Hopper's paintings have a common theme of isolation and loneliness, and this picture is no exception. Experts also think that Gas is a safe place for lonely people who are on the road late at night trying to get somewhere. Another thing that makes Hopper's paintings unique is that he has worked on the lighting and color effects.

Bright light comes from the station itself, making that part of the area stand out. The deep red color of the gas pumps makes them stand out, while the trees in the background seem impossible to get through. The one person seems to be a small part of the whole picture. No one knows if this painting is based on a specific gas station, but most people think it is a mix of all the gas stations Hopper has seen.

In the twilight, Hopper and his wife Jo drove around looking for gas stations so that Hopper could paint this picture, according to Jo's diary. The painting is now in the New York, USA, Museum of Modern Art. In Gas, there's nobody but the guy at the pumps, and the objects in the gas station are the ones that stand out the most. The row of trees on the other side of the road in the background made this spot a lucky find for the artist. They added just enough detail to make the painting interesting without taking away from the atmosphere that was typical of his work.

It might be his most well-known painting besides Nighthawks. One can easily imagine what was going on in the office to the right of the work, which is lit up, and it would be interesting to know where the gas station is and if it is still open.

The worker is wearing a nice outfit: blue pants, a brown waistcoat, a light blue shirt, and a dark blue tie. It makes us think of the style of the time. The red tones of the pumps really stand out, and the big white lights on top of each one make them look proud. At the back of the forecourt, there is a sign for the gas station. To our right, there are two white wooden buildings that have been cut out of the painting. The bigger building has a cute red tower that goes up into the sky. The light is on inside, which suggests that this is the main store where you can buy gas and maybe other things as well. From the right, a shadow of light drifts in, pointing to more buildings and also letting us know what time of day Gas was made.

The surrounding landscape is also very well done. A row of green trees creates a wall of color that stretches across the canvas, and the sky above adds a flash of light blue. The grasses under the trees use a lot of pink and yellow, which is repeated in a small section on this side of the road. This makes the painting brighter, which goes well with the more standard colors and keeps that part from getting too dark. The road and floor of the forecourt don't have any details. They look clean and nice, which is how the artist usually presents things that are made by humans. This helps make a feeling of space and calm, which is what makes this artist's work so special.

If you look at Gas, you might even be able to imagine music coming from the open door of a shop that is still open but has only a few customers coming in occasionally. And it always makes me wondering where the mysterious road leads to...
