    Gustav Klimt in a jiffy

Painter Gustav Klimt had numerous weird habits. During one visit to his studio, Friederika Maria Beer-Monti wore a bright polecat jacket made by Klimt's friends at the Wiener Werkstätte. A lot of people think Klimt would like it. Instead, he had her turn the dress inside out to show the red silk lining, and that's how he painted her in the painting. It was only Klimt, Vienna's best-known artist of the time, who could do this because he was so well-known. He is still thought of as one of the best decorative artists of the 20th century, but he also made one of the most important bodies of erotic art of the century. When he first tried to get architectural commissions in an academic way, he found that European art was becoming more and more modern. This inspired him to develop his own highly personal, eclectic, and sometimes fantastic style. Klimt was also the co-founder and first president of the Vienna Secession, which made this movement essential. Klimt didn't want to get into trouble, but the highly controversial subject matter of his work in a very conservative art center kept him from having a successful career. Even though Klimt never married, he is still romantically linked to several mistresses, with whom he is said to have fathered fourteen children, even though he is very secretive about his personal life.

    Klimt's achievements as a painter

For his work decorating public buildings, Klimt first gained fame as a decorative painter of historical scenes and people. "Golden Phase" works, which are almost-abstract compositions that are flat and shimmering, became the real subjects of his paintings as he kept working on the decorative qualities of them.

Though Klimt was a painter of "fine art," he was a great example of how the fine and decorative arts should be equal. Many of his best-known commissions came from people who wanted his work to go with other parts of a whole room, which he called a Gesamtkunstwerk. This is how he made some of his early money (total work of art). Later in his career, he worked with artists from the Wiener Werkstätte, an Austrian design group that worked to improve the quality and look of everyday things.

Klimt was one of the founders of the Vienna Secession in 1897, and he was its first president. He was chosen less for his finished work, which was small at the time, than for his youthful personality and willingness to question authority. His strong personality and international fame as the world's best-known Art Nouveau painter helped the Secession get off to a good start. When he left the movement in 1905, the movement quickly lost its popularity.

Even though Klimt's art is now very popular, it was mostly ignored for most of the 20th century. His works for public places caused a storm of controversy in his own time. They were accused of being obscene because of their erotic content, which led Klimt to stop working for the government. His drawings are no less sexy and show all of his big sexual appetite.

Even though Klimt was well-known and generous to young artists, like Egon Schiele and Oskar Kokoschka, he didn't have many direct followers and his work has always been seen as very personal and unique, even today. There are some similarities between Klimt's paintings and those of other artists who worked in the interwar years, even though many people may not have known about his work.
