(1898, Belgium - 1967, Belgium)
[1927]
Constantly searching for “poetic” and “disturbing” images, Magritte developed the motif of the dead bird from 1926 onwards, associating violence with a conventional image of fragility and innocence.
Preceded by the painting Le Plaisir (1927, Kunstsammlung Nordrhein-Westfalen, Düsseldorf), which shows a little girl devouring a bird and was inspired by the artist's wife eating a chocolate animal, Le Ciel meurtrier multiplies the motif of the bloodied bird against a threatening landscape. Contrasting with the atrocity of the subject, the regular and symmetrical repetition of the birds evokes the decorative wallpapers that René Magritte created at the beginning of his career.
