    Dali reproductions hand-painted on canvas

Salvador Dalí's efforts to make a visual language that can express his dreams and hallucinations are based on Freudian theory. These account for some of the iconic and now ubiquitous images, which helped him become famous during his lifetime and after.

Dalí's work is full of obsessive ideas about sexuality, death, and decay, which strongly suggests that he knew and combined the psychoanalytic theories of his time. Dalí's work is full of symbols that are often easy to figure out. These symbols can be anything from fetishes and animal images to religious symbols and stories from his youth.

Dalí agreed with André Breton's theory of automatism, but ultimately, he chose to use his own method of getting into the unconscious, which he called "paranoiac critical." In this state, a person could pretend to be crazy while still being sane. Dalí himself called this method "irrational knowledge," but his peers, who were mostly Surrealists, used it in many ways, from film to poetry to fashion.

    Salvador Dalí painting style

Salvador Dalí is among the most versatile and prolific artists of the 20th century and the most famous Surrealist. Though chiefly remembered for his painterly output, in the course of his long career he successfully turned to sculpture, printmaking, fashion, advertising, writing, and, perhaps most famously, filmmaking in his collaborations with Luis Buñuel and Alfred Hitchcock. Dalí was renowned for his flamboyant personality and role of mischievous provocateur as much as for his undeniable technical virtuosity. In his early use of organic morphology, his work bears the stamp of fellow Spaniards Pablo Picasso and Joan Miró. His paintings also evince a fascination for Classical and Renaissance art, clearly visible through his hyperrealistic style and religious symbolism of his later work.
