Balthus art and paintings

Balthus was a unique person in the history of painting in the 20th century. He traveled with and drew inspiration from other major artists of the time, but he also went his own way. Antonin Artaud, André Breton, and Rainer Maria Rilke, all important artists from different times, were his teachers, friends, or even collaborators while he was developing his own very refined style of drawing. Most of the time, the scenes he painted were very ordinary bourgeois homes or outdoor settings. However, he was able to show how his subjects (often young women) were feeling and how the viewers might be feeling as well.

Balthus achievements and style

Balthus's work shows that he is dedicated to classical painting methods, even though he uses them on modern subjects in a very restrained, but often charged, way that shows signs of sexuality, social transgression, and anomie.

His "channeling" of the concerns of many thinkers and artists from other fields meant that he took ideas and attitudes from both people and artistic movements and put them together in a new way. Some ideas included depictions of unusual mental states and naughty interactions between people.

Balthus's pictures are often disturbing, which makes people wonder if they should be in public places. His openly breaking of taboos was okay in the French libertine avant-garde, but liberal viewers now think it's wrong.

His work designing sets for dance, opera, and theater helped him tell stories through his paintings of everyday places.

His investment in making pictures with people in them helped show that representational painting was still important in a century when many art styles were moving toward abstraction.
